Dead air is the silent quality killer
Every unedited recording is full of it: the pause while you find the next slide, the gap after a question, the three seconds of shuffling before you restart a sentence. Individually they're nothing; together they routinely add 10–25% to a recording's length and make it feel slow. Cutting them by hand in an editor means scrubbing the whole timeline — this tool finds every gap automatically and removes it in one pass, on your device.
Tuned for speech, safe around words
Detection works on loudness over time: a section only counts as silence when it stays below a threshold for a minimum duration, and a small margin around every cut is preserved so words never clip at the edges. Three presets cover the range from cautious (only long, clearly silent gaps) to aggressive (short pauses too — closer to the fast-cut style of edited YouTube videos). If the first pass cuts too much or too little, switch presets and re-process in place.
Video stays in sync
For video recordings the cut happens on both streams at once — picture and sound are trimmed frame-accurately together, so lips stay synced across every cut. Because that requires re-encoding the video in the browser, expect it to take a while for long files; the audio-only export (ideal for lecture and meeting recordings where the slides don't matter) skips the video work entirely and finishes fast. Pair it with the noise remover and the volume normalizer for a complete free audio cleanup chain.
Frequently asked questions
Anything quieter than a loudness threshold for longer than a minimum duration. The Light preset only cuts long, clearly silent gaps; Strong also cuts shorter pauses and quieter stretches. A fraction of a second is always kept around each cut so speech never starts abruptly.
Yes. The silent sections are cut from both the picture and the sound, keeping them perfectly in sync. Video output is re-encoded (slower); if you only need the sound — podcasts recorded as video calls, for instance — choose the audio-only export, which is much faster.
The presets are conservative by design — Medium requires more than half a second below the threshold before cutting. If a soft-spoken recording loses words, switch to Light; if long pauses survive, go Strong. You can re-process with a different preset without re-uploading anything.
Unedited spoken recordings are typically 10–25% dead air — pauses between sentences, thinking gaps, gaps while switching slides. The result screen shows exactly how many seconds were removed.
Yes. The silence remover is completely free, with no signup, watermarks, or limits. We make money from our video translation service, not from this tool.
No. All processing happens locally in your browser using WebAssembly. Your file never leaves your device — you can even disconnect from the internet once the page has loaded.
